Regional Map

Nestled between the Ekrixi Range and the Tefra forest sits the Akroi region. The Mavros Sea borders this mixed region to the north. The temperate Evgeni Sea to the south is its connection to the world.

Akroi is broken up into three sections:

  • Syllogi

  • Enomenos

  • Reyila

Syllogi is a collection of elven-ruled city-states in western Akroi, consisting of Satiros, Amigys, Kyaeri, and Chorys Dasi. Each city-state rules the urban center and the surrounding countrysides. Monarchies rules these city-states and consider elven persons a higher class of citizen (above humans and half-elves).

Enomenos sits on the eastern edge of Akroi. This democratic collection of city-states includes Kentro, Avato, Olkia, Rotamu, and Notos. These cities have no hierarchy between humans, half-elves, and elves. Historically, Syllogi and Enomenos have never worked together because of this difference in treatment.

Reyila is a small, mountainous queendom in the Systada Mountains in northern Akroi. Though elven-ruled, the queendom views all as equal. This queendom has ties to Syllogi but is considered a separate entity.

Setting

The Palace of Satiros

Nestled in the center of the city-state of Satiros, the palace is a sprawling campus of ornate design centered around an extensive central garden. Gold-gilded vines cascade down columns of green marble. Staircases are crafted from expensive wood, their railings ending in ornately carved scenes of beasts and creatures.

The Central Garden, sitting at the center of the palace, is more than four times the size of any market in the city-state. Statues of delicately carved creatures dot the dense foliage, breaking up the swirl of colors for thick flower patches. Twisting paths weave through the bushes, flowers, and trees and make for private walks for the many palace dwellers.

Districts of Satiros

The sprawling urban center of Satiros is tucked behind thick walls from the surrounding countryside. Ten different sections divide the city-state, including the palace. Cutting through the heart of Satiros, the Halia River serves as a conduit to the world beyond the city-state’s walls.

The Palace, Blossom Center, Petal Row, Blooming Borough, and Wisteria Heights are composed of white-washed stone structures with black roofs. The thick foliage that both coats the buildings and planted into numerous parks pops color back into these sections. Wisteria is the most prominent plant, favored by many after it was used in the crest of Satiros.

Rambler Grove, often referred to as the Weeds, is the only section within the city-state that half-elves and humans can live. While they make up a third of the population, their housing choices are restricted to the small section in southwest Satiros. In recent years, the human and half-elven population has more than doubled. With the restricted space, it means they had to grow their section up, resulting in spindly clusters of buildings and unique use of what land remains. The surge in population is often tied back to King Wyltam’s lethargic rule after his mother placed the strictest laws on humans and half-elves.

Lore

Click on the sections below to expand details.

  • The half-elves and humans in the world of A Queen’s Game are referred to as ‘pilinos.’ This derives from the world pili, which were the first humans formed from earth by the old gods. As such, those who have human descent refer to themselves as a pilinos and take much pride in it.

It is belief that the elven population derived from different ancestors—the fey. Though no one alive claims to know what happened to the fey, it is popular belief that they traveled to Akroi long ago, claiming the land from the original pilinos. To this day, their stories are passed down to those with elven descent as feyrie tales.

  • Stories of the fey often passed down by elves that share moral lessons.

  • Naturally occurring, invisible energy used to perform magic.

Some places in the world are more aithyr-concentrated that others, meaning they have more aithyr streams.

    1. Magic wielding is a measure of mental strength.

    2. Magic is manipulation of aithyr through the will of the mage, not through the will of aithyr. Don’t let aithyr win.

    3. Aithyr cannot be created nor destroyed, only transfered.

    4. A mage’s emotions can interfere with the conversion of aithyr. A mage must control their emotions to avoid unprecedented outcomes.

    5. If a mage can’t visualize their magic, then they can’t adequately perform their magic. Visualization practices are a must.

    6. A weak mind cannot yield aithyr, thus mental strengthening must be routine for mages.

    7. Never rely on magical ability alone. Physical prowess is necessary when using magic for defensive purposes.

    8. Know your limits — with how much aithyr you intake, your mental conditions, and emotional stability.

    9. Mages must obtain consent before using magic on or affecting another individual.

    10. Never wield magic to permanently alter a living creature.

  • Mage’s Eye

    • Substance that has a relaxing effect when ingested. Helps  see aithyr streams.

    Magicsbane

    • Substance that, when it enters the bloodstream, prevents the affected from accessing aithyr.

    Drakon Root

    • Illegal substance that is lethal to pilinos.

    Strychnine

    • A poisonous substance that was imported to Satiros to kill vermin. When invest by a. humanoid, mimics the symptoms of feybarb.

  • A quickly onset illness that only affects elves. Highly contagious and has a high morality rate.

  • Series of battles between the city-states of Syllogi and orcs from Sufiaard. Considered the last “war” in the region.

  • During the early formation of Syllogi, the pilinos resisted. They had once lived freely in the region, as they did in Enomenos, until elven leaders came together, determined to subdue the race whose lives lasted but a fraction of their own. In answer, a band of pilinos took up arms, carving out a small stretch of land between Satiros and Chorys Dasi on the edge of the Ouresk Forest. They fortified a village there named Sepeia, bracing for the conflict they knew was inevitable. These pilinos were the last of their kind to resist the elven advance on the region.

Before the battles began, pilinos leaders turned to the temples and the Deities of Duality for guidance. The cryptic message they received—that the pilinos would "prevail"—gave them hope but enraged the elves. Yet, as with many divine messages, its meaning was a riddle, leaving the pilinos to interpret it with only fragments of understanding.

Skirmishes were common and eventually that led to the pivotal clash between the pilinos defending the city and the elven forces determined to displace them. In the climactic Battle of Sepeia, the elven army set Sepeia ablaze, reducing it to cinders. As pilinos fled into the Ouresk Forest to the north, the elves pursued. They lured their victims out with false promises of peace, only to take sport in striking them down. Gradually, the pilinos realized the treachery and refused to leave their hiding places, forcing the elves to resort to fire as their method of execution.

Reports claimed the flames burned blue and spread with unnatural speed, consuming a region of the forest before anyone could react. Six thousand pilinos died in the blaze—a devastating loss that shattered pilinos morale and marked the last time the temples dared involve themselves in mortal conflict.

The fire is believed to be responsible for the formation of the Dead Forest, permanently altering a portion of the Ouresk, although historical records remained inconclusive
